Larry & Bethany

on kindness, boundaries, and choosing wisely
Int. Larry and Bethany's Living Room — Late Afternoon

Soft sunlight pours through the windows. The house is quiet. A tense silence hangs in the air. Larry stands near the coffee table, nervously holding his phone — still thinking about the difficult call he just had with Sharra.

Bethany walks in with two cups of coffee. She notices his worried expression at once, sets the cups down, and looks at him with concern.

Bethany
Larry... you look upset. What happened?

Larry sighs deeply, hesitates, then finally speaks.

Larry
Sharra called me a little while ago. She sounded desperate.

Bethany's expression turns serious.

Bethany
What did she say?

Larry sits on the couch, rubbing his forehead.

Larry
She told me she's struggling to pay the rent for her house. She asked if I could help her with the money.

Bethany quietly processes his words. She doesn't react with anger — instead, she thinks carefully.

Bethany
So she only needs money for the rent?
Larry
Yes. That's all she asked for. She said she's running out of time — if she can't pay soon, she could lose the house.

Bethany remains calm. She takes a slow breath.

Bethany
Then maybe we should find another solution. Instead of you giving her the money, I'll call my dad. Maybe he can help.
Larry
Are you sure? I don't want to put your family in an uncomfortable position.
Bethany
Don't worry. Let me talk to him first. We'll see what he says.

Bethany picks up her phone, walks to the window, and dials her father's number. It rings. After a few moments — he answers.

Intercut — Phone Conversation
Bethany's Father
Hello, sweetheart. How are you?
Bethany
Hi, Dad. I'm okay, but I need to talk to you about something important.
Bethany's Father
Of course. Tell me what's going on.

Bethany glances toward Larry, who quietly waits in the background, then begins explaining everything.

Bethany
Dad, Sharra is having financial problems. She can't pay the rent for her house. She reached out to Larry and asked him for help. Larry was thinking about giving her the money — but I thought maybe we could help instead.

A brief silence. Her father carefully considers every detail, then speaks — calm but firm.

Bethany's Father
Bethany... listen to me very carefully.
Bethany
Okay, Dad. I'm listening.
Bethany's Father
Don't give Sharra the money.
Bethany
Why? She really needs help.
Bethany's Father
Sometimes helping someone with money creates a different problem. If Larry keeps solving Sharra's financial difficulties, she'll continue depending on him — and every time she depends on him, Larry stays pulled into her life. That isn't healthy for anyone, neither for Larry, nor for your relationship.
Bethany
But she's in trouble. I don't want to ignore someone who's struggling.
Bethany's Father
Kindness is important. Compassion matters. But healthy boundaries matter too. If Sharra always turns to Larry whenever there's a crisis, she'll never learn to solve these problems independently. Sometimes the hardest decision is also the wisest one.

Bethany stays silent, thinking carefully. Her father continues.

Bethany's Father
If Sharra moves forward without relying on Larry, their lives will naturally become more separate — and that distance will let you and Larry focus on your own future together.
Bethany
So you're saying I shouldn't offer the money?
Bethany's Father
That's right. Don't give the money. Encourage her to find other solutions. Support doesn't always mean financial help — sometimes it means allowing people to become stronger on their own.
Bethany
I understand. Thank you for being honest with me.
Bethany's Father
I only want what's best for you. A strong relationship needs trust, clear boundaries, and wise decisions.
Bethany
I love you, Dad.
Bethany's Father
I love you too. Take care.

Silence fills the room again. Bethany lowers her phone, thinking, reflecting, choosing her words carefully. Larry walks closer.

Larry
What did your dad say?
Bethany
He told me not to give Sharra the money. He believes that if we keep solving every financial problem for her, she'll continue depending on you.

Larry remains quiet.

Bethany
He said healthy boundaries are important. He thinks Sharra needs to find another way forward without relying on you.

Larry exhales slowly, thinking of all the times he tried to rescue people — and how those situations often grew more complicated.

Larry
Maybe... he has a point.
Bethany
I think so too. Helping someone shouldn't create emotional confusion or unhealthy dependence.
Larry
I never wanted to make things more complicated. I only wanted to help.

Bethany places a comforting hand on his shoulder.

Bethany
I know. That's one of the reasons I love you — you have a kind heart. But kindness also needs wisdom.

Larry smiles faintly. Her words comfort him. He feels understood, not judged.

Bethany
Maybe we can encourage Sharra to look for other resources — friends, family, community assistance. There are many ways people can receive help.
Larry
You're right. I don't have to be the answer to every problem.
Bethany
Exactly. Sometimes the most loving decision is stepping back.

The weight on Larry's shoulders slowly begins to disappear. He gently takes Bethany's hand. She squeezes it. Neither speaks for several seconds — words are no longer necessary.

Trust. Respect. Boundaries.

Together, they choose the path that protects both compassion and their relationship.

Outside the window, the golden evening sun slowly begins to set — its warm light filling the room with hope.
