THE DISCOVERY
INT. LIVING ROOM – EVENING
The warm glow of the setting sun fills the living room. Larry steps into the kitchen, leaving his phone on the coffee table.
Bethany walks in carrying a basket of folded laundry. The phone vibrates repeatedly. She sees the screen light up.
Purnell: “Larry… when are you finally going to divorce Bethany? You’ve been talking about it long enough.”
Bethany freezes. Her smile vanishes instantly. She picks up the phone with trembling hands and rereads the message.
BETHANY (whispering): Divorce? Larry has been talking to Purnell about divorcing me?
CALL TO DADDY
Bethany quickly dials her father, Mr. Newburger. Tears form in her eyes.
BETHANY: Daddy… I just saw something on Larry’s phone. Purnell texted him asking when he’s going to divorce me. He’s planning everything behind my back.
FATHER’S ADVICE
INT. MR. NEWBURGER’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS
Mr. Newburger’s expression turns serious as he listens.
MR. NEWBURGER: Listen carefully. Don’t panic. One text doesn’t tell the whole story. Did Larry reply?
Bethany checks the phone — no reply yet.
MR. NEWBURGER: Before you accuse your husband, you need facts, not assumptions. Marriage takes two people. You’ve argued a lot… questioned him… started fights over little things. Maybe he’s emotionally exhausted.
CONFRONTATION
INT. LIVING ROOM
Larry returns from the kitchen and sees Bethany holding his phone, eyes red from crying.
LARRY: Bethany… why are you holding my phone?
BETHANY: I saw Purnell’s message. Are you planning to divorce me?
LARRY: That’s what this is about? I vent to my friend sometimes when we fight. I’m exhausted, but I haven’t hired a lawyer.
LARRY: Every time I try to talk to you, you interrupt and assume the worst.
FATHER CALLS LARRY
Mr. Newburger calls Larry directly.
MR. NEWBURGER: Tell me honestly… Are you planning to divorce my daughter?
LARRY: No, sir. Not today. But sometimes I think about giving up. I love Bethany, but constantly fighting is different.
MR. NEWBURGER: Don’t let outsiders control your marriage. If it’s worth saving, fight for it together.
A NEW BEGINNING
Later that night, Larry sits beside Bethany on the couch. No yelling. Only silence and honesty.
LARRY: I’m still here. That should tell you something.
BETHANY: Can we start over? Without the yelling… without the assumptions… without everyone else involved?
LARRY: That’s all I’ve wanted.
Larry picks up his phone and replies to Purnell:
“My marriage is between me and my wife. Please stay out of it.”
Bethany watches the message send. A small, hopeful smile appears on her face.
For the first time in a long while, they chose each other over the drama.
