Although doctors had assured her that the procedure was routine, fear refused to disappear. She wasn't asking for money, gifts, or impossible promises. She simply wanted someone she trusted to sit beside her while she faced the unknown.
Gathering every bit of courage she had, Bethany approached Larry quietly. Her voice barely rose above a whisper as she asked if he would travel with her. She admitted she was scared, something she rarely confessed. Her request wasn't dramatic—it came from genuine vulnerability.
Larry looked away almost immediately. Instead of answering, he started talking about work schedules, traffic, and responsibilities waiting at home. Every sentence felt like another attempt to avoid the real question. Bethany listened carefully, hoping he would eventually say yes.

"She didn't want you to find out this way, but someone else is going with her to Miami. After Friday, nothing between you will ever be the same."
Larry immediately tried calling Bethany, but every call went unanswered. Text messages remained unread. For the first time all day, uncertainty replaced pride.
Friday morning arrived faster than either of them expected.
At the airport, Bethany quietly checked in with a small suitcase and a determined expression. Standing beside her was a mysterious companion whose face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap. They exchanged only a few quiet words before disappearing toward the security checkpoint.
Hundreds of miles away, Larry suddenly made a decision he hadn't planned. Without telling anyone, he grabbed his car keys and rushed toward the airport.
As he reached the departure board, he froze.
The Miami flight had already begun boarding.
Larry stared at the gate, realizing he might already be too late—not just for the flight, but for Bethany's trust.

The caller ID displayed only one word:
UNKNOWN.
