Charlotte stood inside the quiet office of the family building, reviewing invoices and rental reports when Matt appeared at the doorway. He waited until they were alone before lowering his voice.
“You need to be careful with Bethany,” he warned. “Whenever she feels threatened, she plays the victim.”
Charlotte slowly looked up. She had heard Matt criticize Bethany before, but this time his words carried a different weight.
“She’s still family,” Charlotte replied. “And you know this situation with Dad is complicated.”
Matt frowned. “That’s exactly what she wants you to believe.”

Mr. Newburger had recently removed Bethany and Greg from the building after becoming dissatisfied with how they handled the rental income and daily responsibilities.
Since then, Charlotte had stepped into the role of managing the property. She handled tenant concerns, reviewed expenses, organized records, and made sure the building continued operating smoothly.
Newburger trusted her because she had earned that trust.
Matt, however, had never accepted the decision.
He believed he should have had more authority. He had previously tried to position himself as a manager, but Newburger had not been impressed with his performance.

“Why do you suddenly care so much about this building?” Charlotte asked.
Matt crossed his arms. “Because it belongs to the family.”
“That’s not an answer.”
He stared at her.
Charlotte continued, “Dad never gave you control. He chose me to manage it. So why are you pushing so hard to get involved?”
Matt’s expression hardened.
“Maybe because I understand what happens when people are given too much power.”
Charlotte immediately understood the accusation.
“Are you talking about Bethany—or me?”
Matt didn't answer.

Matt finally stepped closer.
“Bethany could be trying to turn you against me,” he said. “She knows you trust Dad. If she convinces you that I’m the problem, she can control what happens next.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“Matt, listen to yourself. You're accusing Bethany of manipulating people while you're standing here trying to make me suspicious of her.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Charlotte expected Matt to explode.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
Matt became completely calm.
“Then don't believe me,” he said quietly.
Charlotte stared at him.
“Check the records yourself.”
His calmness unsettled her more than anger would have.

Later that evening, Charlotte returned to the office alone. She opened the building's digital records and began checking recent activity.
At first, everything appeared normal.
