The hospital room was unusually quiet, except for the steady beeping of medical monitors. Bethany lay weak and exhausted beneath the hospital blankets, barely moving as another wave of pain passed through her body.
Her recent tummy tuck, medically known as an abdominoplasty, had developed serious complications. She was suffering from intense pain, uncomfortable tightness, tenderness, and an infection that had left her doctors deeply concerned. Larry looked back toward Bethany's room.
“Why?” he quietly asked himself.

Jessie took one uncertain step forward.
