The Night Kendrick Found His Dog
Chapter One — Something Was Wrong
Kendrick returned home late that night, exhausted after a long day. The moment he opened the front door, however, a strange feeling came over him. The house was unusually quiet. There was no excited barking, no familiar paws racing across the floor, and no cheerful greeting from the dog he loved so much.
At first, Kendrick assumed his dog was sleeping somewhere unusual. He called its name and waited. Nothing happened. He checked the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen, and even the small spaces where the dog sometimes curled up when it wanted to be alone. Every room was empty.
Then Kendrick noticed something that made his stomach tighten. The dog's leash was missing too.
He stood silently for a moment, trying to make sense of it. The dog could not have simply walked away. Someone had taken it. And there was only one person Kendrick could think of who might have done something like that.
Chapter Two — Libby's Silence
Kendrick immediately thought of Libby. He knew she sometimes liked to tease him and push his patience, but taking his dog without asking was something completely different. Kendrick believed she had deliberately taken the dog just to get under his skin.
He grabbed his phone and called her. Once. No answer.
He called again. Still nothing.
Kendrick sent a message, asking where she was and demanding to know why she had his dog. The message was delivered, but there was no response. The silence only made him more anxious.
Kendrick began imagining all the places Libby might have gone. He knew the city well enough to understand that there were quiet roads and wooded paths where someone could walk for hours without seeing another person. If Libby had taken the dog somewhere isolated, she could be putting both herself and the animal at risk.
His frustration quickly turned into fear. He grabbed his keys and left the house, determined to find them.
Chapter Three — The Isolated Road
Meanwhile, Libby was walking along a deserted road with Kendrick's dog. The night was dark and unusually still. Trees surrounded the narrow path, and the only sounds were her footsteps and the dog's breathing.
Libby had not expected anything to go wrong. She had taken the dog because she wanted to annoy Kendrick, believing the situation would be harmless. But the farther she walked, the more isolated the road became.
Suddenly, the dog stopped.
Libby looked ahead, confused. Then she heard movement coming from the bushes. Leaves rustled. Branches snapped. Before she could react, several stray dogs emerged from the darkness.
The animals surrounded Kendrick's dog. Panic spread through Libby as she tried to pull the leash away and protect the frightened animal. She shouted and waved her arms, desperately attempting to scare the strays back.
But everything happened too quickly. The situation became chaotic, and the dog was badly injured before Libby could get it to safety.
Chapter Four — Kendrick Arrives
Kendrick eventually reached the isolated road. The sight that greeted him stopped him in his tracks.
His beloved dog was lying severely injured on the ground. Libby was beside it, shaken and speechless, trying to stay close to the animal.
Kendrick rushed toward his dog. His anger, fear, and heartbreak collided all at once. He carefully looked at the animal, hoping it was still strong enough to survive.
Then he turned toward Libby.
His voice was filled with anger, but beneath that anger was deep pain. This was not simply an argument anymore. Kendrick's dog was suffering because someone had made a reckless choice without thinking about the consequences.
Libby opened her mouth, but no explanation came. She looked down at the injured dog and then back at Kendrick. For the first time, she seemed to understand the seriousness of what she had done.
Chapter Five — No Excuse
The road fell silent again. Kendrick waited for an answer, but Libby had none. Whatever reason she had originally had for taking the dog no longer mattered. A decision that seemed like a simple prank had turned into a frightening and painful situation.
Kendrick knelt beside his dog and focused on keeping it calm. His thoughts were racing. He knew they needed help immediately, and every second mattered.
Libby stayed beside him, overwhelmed by guilt. She wanted to say something that could make the situation better, but there were no words that could undo what had happened.
That night taught both of them a difficult lesson: a person's actions can have consequences far beyond what they originally intend. What Libby thought would be a harmless way to annoy Kendrick had placed an innocent animal in serious danger and shattered the trust between them.
Sometimes, the worst consequences begin with a decision that seems small. And when someone else's safety is involved, there may be no chance to take that decision back.
