Bethany’s Ultimatum Could Change Everything
1. The Warning
The room felt unusually heavy as Bethany stood across from Larry. Her eyes were filled with frustration and tears, but beneath the emotion was a determination Larry had rarely seen before. The upcoming Labor Day fish fry had already become a source of tension, and the names Sharra and Lynette had pushed Bethany to her limit.
Bethany pointed toward Larry, making her position unmistakably clear. She told him that if Sharra and Lynette came to the fish fry, she would not simply sit quietly and watch them walk in.
Larry listened without raising his voice. His calmness only made Bethany more suspicious.
2. Larry’s Strange Calm
Usually, a confrontation this intense would have caused Larry to argue back. Instead, he leaned against the nearby counter and remained almost completely composed.
There was something different about him. His expression carried a faint smirk, and every answer seemed carefully chosen. Bethany quickly noticed that Larry wasn't simply defending Sharra and Lynette. He appeared to be testing her.
The more emotional Bethany became, the calmer Larry seemed. That contrast made the room feel even more uncomfortable.

Larry knew exactly which subjects could make Bethany angry. Instead of backing away from the argument, he casually mentioned that Sharra and Lynette were important people in his life.
Bethany's expression tightened. She asked Larry why he seemed almost pleased to see her upset.
Larry gave another subtle smile. He did not openly admit what he was doing, but his behavior suggested that he wanted Bethany to react.
In Larry's mind, the situation seemed simple: if Bethany lost control, perhaps he would finally have the reason he needed to leave the marriage behind.

But Larry underestimated Bethany.
For several moments, she stood silently. Her anger was still obvious, but something else had appeared in her expression—a realization.
She looked directly at Larry and began connecting everything. His calm voice. His smirk. His carefully chosen comments. The way he kept bringing up Sharra and Lynette.
Bethany suddenly understood that Larry might be trying to make her react exactly the way he wanted.
And if that was true, she refused to give him the satisfaction.

The room became completely quiet.
Bethany lowered her hand and stopped arguing. She wiped away a tear and continued staring into Larry's eyes.
Larry's confidence slowly disappeared.
He had expected shouting. He had expected another emotional reaction. Instead, Bethany had become calm—and that was far more unsettling.
“That's what you want, isn't it?” Bethany finally asked.
Larry said nothing.

Bethany stepped back and shook her head. She realized that Larry might have been deliberately pushing her toward a decision that would make leaving easier for him.
But instead of giving him the reaction he wanted, she decided to change the rules.
Larry suddenly looked uncertain. The smirk was gone. For the first time that evening, he appeared to wonder whether Bethany had discovered his entire plan.
Neither of them moved. Neither wanted to be the first to speak.

Bethany finally turned toward the door.
Larry watched her carefully, waiting for another angry outburst. Instead, Bethany calmly picked up her phone and looked at the screen.
“You wanted me to make a decision tonight,” she said quietly. “So I'm going to make one.”
Larry's face changed immediately.
“Bethany, what are you talking about?”
She looked back at him but said nothing.
Then her phone began ringing.
Bethany stared at the caller's name, and Larry suddenly realized that whatever decision she had made might involve someone neither of them expected.
She slowly answered the call.
“I’m ready. Tell me where to meet you.”
Larry froze.
