Libby's Hidden Secret
She thought she was running from treatment. But someone was hiding the truth.
1. The Doorway
Libby was only a few steps away from the front door when Cadrick stopped her. She had already made up her mind to leave, desperate to escape the conversation that had become too overwhelming. Her breathing was uneven, and tears still clung to her eyes. Cadrick did not look angry. Instead, his face showed something much deeper—fear.
He stepped closer, but carefully, as if he was afraid that one wrong word would make her disappear completely.
Libby froze. For several seconds, she stared at the door without saying a word. The question had touched something she had been desperately trying to bury. She finally turned toward him, but before she could answer, her phone suddenly began to ring.
2. The Unknown Caller
The number on the screen was unfamiliar. Libby looked at it once, and the color drained from her face. Whatever she saw seemed to frighten her more than the conversation about chemotherapy and radiation ever had.
Cadrick noticed the change immediately.
“Who is calling you?” he asked.
Libby quickly rejected the call.
But Cadrick knew she was lying. Her fingers tightened around the phone, and she kept looking at the screen as though she expected another call. The silence between them became heavier.
Then the phone vibrated again.
3. The Threatening Message
This time, it was a text message. Libby opened it, and her eyes immediately filled with fear.
Libby quickly locked the screen and pulled the phone toward her chest. Cadrick tried to see what the message said, but she turned away.
Libby shook her head. She wanted to walk away, but her legs seemed unable to move. The message had confirmed her worst fear: someone knew exactly what she was trying to hide.
4. The Confession
For the first time, Libby stopped pretending everything was fine. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she struggled to find the courage to speak.
Cadrick stared at her in disbelief. He had expected fear of treatment, fear of losing her hair, or fear of the uncertainty ahead. He had never imagined that Libby believed someone had interfered with her medical records.
“What are you saying?” he asked. “Why would anyone do that?”
Libby looked down.
“Because there are things in that report that someone doesn’t want people to know.”
Cadrick's expression hardened. Suddenly, this was no longer just about whether Libby would accept treatment. There was another story underneath it all.
5. Cadrick Demands the Truth
Cadrick gently took a step toward Libby. He was no longer trying to convince her to start treatment. He simply wanted her to stop carrying the secret alone.
Libby wiped her tears, but she still refused to reveal the name.
“You don't understand, Cadrick. If I say too much, someone could find out. And if that happens, everything changes.”
“Everything has already changed,” he replied.
His words left Libby silent. She knew he was right. The moment she received that message, the secret had stopped being hers alone.
6. The Second Call
Before Cadrick could ask another question, Libby's phone rang again.
This time, the screen displayed a name that neither of them expected to see: Dr. Rollins.
Libby stared at the screen. Her hands trembled. The same doctor who had spoken to her about treatment was now calling her directly.
Cadrick watched her carefully.
Libby hesitated before finally accepting the call.
For several seconds, neither she nor Cadrick spoke. Then a serious voice came through the phone.
“Libby, I need you to listen carefully. I know what happened to your report…”
Libby's eyes widened.
7. The Truth Behind the Report
Cadrick could not hear everything, but he could see the shock spreading across Libby's face. She sat down slowly, as if her legs had suddenly lost their strength.
Dr. Rollins continued speaking. He told her that something about her medical information had raised serious questions. There were inconsistencies that should never have been there, and someone appeared to have accessed information they should not have touched.
Libby covered her mouth as tears returned to her eyes.
There was a pause on the other end.
“Yes,” Dr. Rollins replied. “But there is something even more important. I know who first noticed the changes.”
Cadrick looked at Libby, realizing that the answer could change everything. The person behind the mystery might be closer to them than either of them had imagined.
8. The Cliffhanger
Libby slowly stood up. Her fear had not disappeared, but something else had replaced it—determination.
She looked at Cadrick and whispered, “I think I know who it is.”
Cadrick's eyes widened.
“Who?”
Libby looked toward the doorway, then back at her phone. She seemed terrified to say the name aloud.
The call remained connected. Dr. Rollins was still waiting on the other end. Cadrick stood completely still, while Libby struggled to control her breathing.
Neither of them knew that the next name spoken could expose a secret that had been hidden for far longer than Libby's illness.
