A marriage filled with unanswered questions
Bethany’s Fear of Betrayal
One cautious question from Charlotte forces Bethany to confront the possibility she has been trying hardest not to imagine.
1. A Question That Changes Everything
Charlotte sat beside her cousin Bethany on the sofa, choosing her words carefully. The room was peaceful, but Charlotte had been carrying a troubling thought and could no longer decide whether keeping it to herself was kinder than asking. She turned toward Bethany, studied her face for a moment, and spoke in a cautious voice.
“Bethany, can I ask you something? Do you think it’s possible that Larry and Sharra slept together when they went to Puerto Rico?”
The question landed like a sudden blow. Bethany’s expression changed instantly. Her eyes widened, her lips parted, and she stared at Charlotte as though she had misheard her. For several seconds, she could not find a single word. She had expected sympathy, perhaps advice about her difficult marriage—but not a possibility so painful that it seemed to rearrange everything she thought she understood.
2. The Silence After the Question
Charlotte watched Bethany closely, immediately sensing that the question had reached a place of deep hurt. She had not intended to accuse Larry or claim that anything had happened. She only wanted Bethany to consider whether there might be an explanation for his increasingly distant behavior. But the moment the words were spoken, Charlotte could see that Bethany’s mind had begun racing ahead of them both.
Bethany looked down at her hands, then toward the empty space across the room. The ordinary details of the living room suddenly seemed strange and distant. She tried to tell herself that a question was not proof, and suspicion was not the same as truth. Still, the thought had entered her mind, and she could not simply push it away.
Puerto Rico. Larry and Sharra together. The unanswered questions that had followed them home. Each thought seemed to pull another from the shadows.
3. Remembering Her Husband’s Rejection
Bethany began connecting Charlotte’s question to the painful weeks she had spent trying to reach Larry. She was his legal wife. She had hoped that marriage meant being able to speak honestly about loneliness, affection, and physical closeness without feeling as though she were begging for attention. Yet every time she tried to discuss their lack of intimacy, Larry seemed to find a reason to avoid the conversation.
Sometimes he blamed stress. At other times, he said he needed to go to the gym to clear his head. He might change the subject, become distracted, or act as if the conversation could wait until another day. Bethany had repeatedly tried to believe that he was simply overwhelmed or that their relationship had entered a difficult season. She had told herself that love could survive distance if both people were willing to work through it.
But now, Charlotte’s question made that explanation feel less secure. If Larry had been unwilling to share intimacy with his own wife, could he somehow have been willing to share it with Sharra? Bethany hated herself for even considering the thought, yet she could not stop it from forming.
4. The Fear She Could No Longer Hide
Bethany clasped her hands together. Her fingers trembled, and she pressed them tightly as though the pressure might hold her thoughts in place. She took a shallow breath and tried to speak, but the first words caught in her throat. When she finally looked up, her eyes were already shining with tears.
Her voice broke before she could finish. The possibility was not a confirmed fact, and she knew that. There was no proof in Charlotte’s question, no clear answer to explain Larry’s behavior. Yet the uncertainty itself felt unbearable. If her suspicion turned out to be true, she would have to reconsider not only the trip, but every moment when she had trusted Larry’s explanations and blamed herself for feeling unwanted.
She lowered her gaze, fighting back tears that were already spilling down her cheeks.
5. When Emotion Takes Over
The more Bethany tried to calm herself, the harder it became to breathe steadily. Her chest rose and fell in uneven movements. She gripped the edge of the sofa, searching for something solid to hold on to while her thoughts spun out of control. Her eyes moved anxiously around the room, but nothing seemed to settle her. The room was still; inside her, everything felt as though it were falling apart.
Charlotte’s concern quickly replaced her uncertainty. She moved closer and gently placed her hands on Bethany’s shoulders, trying to bring her attention back to the present moment.
Charlotte spoke softly, hoping that the reminder would help. She knew she had asked a difficult question, but she had not wanted to make Bethany suffer. She wanted her cousin to understand that she did not have to solve the mystery in that instant, and that a frightening possibility did not automatically become reality simply because it felt convincing.
6. “Why Has He Kept Rejecting Me?”
Bethany tried to follow Charlotte’s words, but her mind kept returning to Larry. She pictured the conversations she had started and the ways he had pulled away from them. She remembered how carefully she had chosen her words, hoping he would hear the hurt beneath them rather than take them as criticism. She had wanted reassurance that she was still loved and desired. Instead, she had been left with silence and explanations that never seemed to answer the question she was really asking.
She turned toward Charlotte, heartbreak and disbelief competing in her tearful eyes.
Her voice rose with desperation, then collapsed into sobs. The questions were not merely about physical intimacy. They were about trust, honesty, and the fear that the person she had built her life around might have been keeping something devastating from her. She wanted an explanation that would make sense of the pain, but she feared what that explanation might reveal.
7. Charlotte Holds Her Close
Charlotte pulled Bethany into a firm, comforting embrace. She wrapped her arms around her cousin and let her cry, understanding that a quick answer would not erase the fear that had taken hold. She rubbed Bethany’s back gently and stayed close, even as Bethany’s breathing remained uneven and her shoulders shook with each sob.
“I’m here,” Charlotte murmured. “You don’t have to figure everything out right now. We still need to know what actually happened. Please don’t let a possibility become a verdict before you have the truth.”
Bethany clung to her, unable to respond. She wanted to believe Charlotte’s reassurance, but another part of her was already replaying every unanswered question from her marriage. The possibility of betrayal had made the past feel different. What she once considered ordinary distance now seemed loaded with meaning, though she knew that fear could make even small details look like evidence.
Charlotte held her quietly, wishing she could protect her from every painful thought. But she could not promise that Larry had been faithful, just as she could not honestly say he had betrayed Bethany. The truth remained somewhere beyond the room, waiting to be faced.
8. A Marriage Full of Unanswered Questions
Gradually, the room fell silent except for Bethany’s uneven breathing and the occasional quiet sob. Charlotte stayed beside her, unwilling to leave her alone with the fear that had surfaced. Bethany’s trembling lips, devastated eyes, and distant expression revealed how deeply the thought had shaken her. She had entered the conversation believing that her marriage was troubled; now she was frightened that the trouble might have a more painful explanation than she had ever imagined.
Still, one question remained unanswered: what had really happened during Larry and Sharra’s trip to Puerto Rico? Charlotte’s words had opened a door, but they had not revealed what lay behind it. Bethany needed more than a suspicion. She needed honesty from Larry, and she needed to decide whether she could face the answer, whatever it might be.
As Charlotte continued holding her, Bethany stared into the distance. Her thoughts returned to Larry’s repeated refusals, the conversations he had avoided, and the growing distance between them. She wondered whether she had misunderstood him—or whether she had ignored signs because the truth was too frightening to consider.
For now, she had no proof and no resolution. Only heartbreak, uncertainty, and the painful feeling that the foundation of her marriage was shifting beneath her. The next conversation with Larry could change everything. But before she could confront him, she would have to find the strength to ask the question she was now afraid to hear answered.
