The DNA Report Shattered Shayla’s World — Is Wayne Kai’s Real Father?
The Report
Shayla stared at the DNA report in her trembling hands. The paper felt heavier than anything she had ever held. The words were printed in plain, clinical black, yet they seemed to burn straight through her fingers.
According to the results, Anthony was not Kai’s biological father.
She read the report again and again. She checked the names, the dates, the sample numbers, the small print at the bottom of the page. She was desperately hoping the laboratory had made a mistake, that some careless technician had mixed up a vial. But every line said the same thing, and every time she read it, the floor beneath her seemed to tilt a little further.
A Name Echoes
The house was quiet except for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of Kai’s cartoons. Shayla sank onto the edge of the sofa, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure it could be heard in the next room.
Then, without warning, one name echoed through her mind.
Wayne!
She pressed a hand over her mouth. Could it be possible that Wayne was Kai’s real father? Was there a secret she had buried deep in her past that was finally coming back to haunt her? She had spent years convincing herself that some doors were better left closed. Now the door had blown wide open, and she was standing in the wind.
The Boy in Her Arms
Kai wandered in, rubbing his eyes, his hair sticking up in every direction. He climbed into her lap the way he always did, without asking, certain he belonged there.
Shayla pulled him close to her chest, and tears filled her eyes. She breathed in the familiar smell of his hair and felt her whole world shrinking down to the weight of one small boy. Nothing in the report could change the way she loved him. But everything in it could change the life he had always known.
“If Anthony isn’t his father,” she whispered into his hair, “then who is Kai’s real dad? And if it’s Wayne, why have I kept the truth hidden for so many years?”
Kai only yawned, safe and innocent, with no idea that the ground was shaking beneath him.
The Weight of the Past
Memories she had locked away began to creep back. Old conversations, unanswered messages, a season of her life she had never spoken about to anyone. She remembered the fear she had felt back then, and the promises she had made to herself about silence.
She had told herself that time would soften everything. She had told herself that if she never said the words aloud, they could never hurt anyone. But secrets do not disappear simply because they are ignored. They wait. They grow quietly in the dark, patient and heavy, until the day they decide to be heard.
And today, it seemed, was that day.
The Call
Suddenly, her phone rang.
It buzzed against the coffee table, lighting up the room. Wayne’s name appeared on the screen.
Shayla froze. Answering the call felt terrifying, but ignoring it seemed impossible. The phone kept ringing, each buzz like a knock on a door she was not ready to open. Her thumb hovered above the screen. Finally, with trembling fingers, she picked up.
“Shayla,” Wayne said in a serious voice, “I need to talk to you about something important. It’s about Kai.”
Shayla’s heart nearly stopped.
The Question That Froze Her
“About Kai?” she asked nervously. “What do you know?”
For a moment there was only silence on the line, long enough that she could hear him breathing. When Wayne finally spoke, his question made her blood run cold.
“Shayla, tell me something first. Did you get a DNA test done?”
Her fingers nearly released the report. The paper slipped, and she caught it against her knee. The room blurred around her.
How did Wayne know about the DNA test? She had told no one. Not her friends, not her family, not even Anthony. Had he already known the truth all along? Was he really Kai’s biological father? Or was there someone else hiding behind this shocking mystery?
The Truth She Feared
With tears streaming down her face, Shayla finally asked the question she had been afraid to voice. Her words came out thin and shaking, barely louder than a breath.
“Wayne, tell me the truth… Is Kai your son?”
Complete silence followed.
It stretched on and on. She could hear her own pulse, the cartoon music from the next room, the tick of the clock on the wall. She held Kai tighter, as though she could shield him from whatever was coming through the phone.
Then Wayne finally spoke, and his next words threatened to change everything Shayla believed about her son’s past.
