The Quiet Before the Storm
Golden sunlight streamed through the large windows of Bethany's living room. The house was unusually quiet. Bethany sat on the couch reviewing college documents and financial papers, a folder labeled "Brooke's College Admission" resting on the coffee table. Everything appeared organized — everything except the emotional storm about to enter the room.
Soft footsteps echoed from the hallway. Brooke slowly walked in, her eyes red from crying, clearly holding back tears for hours. Bethany noticed immediately and set the papers aside, standing, concern filling her face.
BETHANY: Brooke... Honey... What's wrong? You look like you've been crying.
Brooke lowered her head. Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks. Her breathing turned shaky. Without another word, she folded her hands together — almost as if she were begging.
BROOKE: Mom... Please... Please don't make me go.
The Impossible Request
Bethany froze, confusion spreading across her face.
BETHANY: What are you talking about? Go where?
BROOKE: College... Please don't send me there. Please cancel my admission.
Bethany stared at her in complete disbelief. She never expected to hear those words. Tears kept falling as Brooke's voice trembled, barely able to control her emotions.
BROOKE: I'm begging you... Please. Don't make me leave.
Bethany slowly walked closer and gently held Brooke's shoulders.
BETHANY: Sweetheart... We worked so hard for this. You dreamed about college for years. Why are you suddenly saying this? Tell me what's really going on.
The Real Reason
Brooke wiped away her tears, struggling to speak.
BROOKE: Because Isaiah doesn't want to go there anymore. He doesn't want to move to another state. He said he wants to stay here. If he's staying... then I don't want to go either.
Silence filled the room. Bethany could not believe what she just heard. She slowly let go of Brooke's shoulders, a mixture of disappointment and heartbreak crossing her face.
BETHANY: You're willing to throw away your future... because of a boy?
BROOKE: He's not just a boy. I love him. I don't want us to be separated. If I leave... everything will change.
Bethany sighed deeply and walked toward the window, looking outside, trying to remain calm. Memories flashed through her mind — filling out applications, late nights helping with essays, campus tours, the pride of the acceptance letter.
Sacrifice and Doubt
BETHANY: Do you know how hard we worked for this? How many nights we stayed awake? How many sacrifices were made?
Brooke quietly nodded.
BROOKE: I know... and I'm sorry. But I can't leave Isaiah behind.
Bethany turned around, her voice growing firmer.
BETHANY: And what if Isaiah changes his mind next month? What if he meets someone else? What if life takes him somewhere different? Will you still be happy knowing you gave up your dream?
Brooke didn't answer. She simply cried harder. Bethany walked closer again and gently wiped the tears from her daughter's face.
BETHANY: Baby... Love is beautiful. But real love should never stop you from becoming who you're meant to be.
Choosing Herself
BROOKE: I just don't want to lose him.
Bethany smiled sadly.
BETHANY: If your relationship is real... distance won't destroy it. If it's meant to last... it will survive.
BROOKE: What if it doesn't?
BETHANY: Then it wasn't meant to be. And you'll still have your education. You'll still have your future. No one can ever take that away from you.
Brooke walked toward the coffee table and noticed the admission folder, her name printed across the front. She gently touched it. More tears fell.
BROOKE: Every time I look at these papers... I feel like I'm choosing between my future... and the person I love.
BETHANY: No. You're choosing yourself. There's a difference.
The Mother's Answer
In the kitchen, Bethany poured two glasses of water and handed one to Brooke, whose hands trembled as she accepted it. Mother and daughter sat across from each other in silence. Finally, Brooke looked directly into Bethany's eyes.
BROOKE: Please... I'm asking you with all my heart. Cancel my admission. I don't want to go.
Bethany slowly set her glass down and took a deep breath.
BETHANY: Brooke... If I cancel your admission today... there's a chance you'll regret it for the rest of your life. And if that happens... I could never forgive myself.
BROOKE: I'd rather regret college... than regret losing Isaiah.
Bethany looked away. Those words cut deep. She knew Brooke truly believed them — but she also knew love at a young age can cloud important decisions.
As sunset light filled the room, Bethany picked up the admission folder, holding it in both hands, then slowly looked at Brooke.
BETHANY: I'm not canceling anything today. Not while you're emotional. Not while you're making a decision based on fear.
BROOKE: So... you're saying no?
Bethany walked over and hugged Brooke tightly. Brooke immediately broke down in her mother's arms.
BETHANY: I'm saying... I'm protecting your future until you're absolutely sure. I love you too much to let one emotional moment decide the rest of your life.
As the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, a mother held her daughter close — knowing that sometimes, the hardest act of love is refusing to make an emotional decision. But will Brooke still feel the same way tomorrow… or will Isaiah's next move change everything?
