Bethany vs. Charlotte — The Maintenance Man Drama
Story Setup: When Bethany finds out that her cousin Charlotte kicked the maintenance man off the property, Bethany becomes furious and confronts her immediately. What follows is an emotional family showdown full of anger, pride, and tension.
INT. BETHANY’S LIVING ROOM – LATE AFTERNOON
The front door swings open hard against the wall.
BETHANY walks inside with a tense expression, still holding her purse tightly in one hand. The air in the house feels strange—too quiet, too stiff, too uncomfortable. Something has happened, and she can feel it before anyone says a word.
Near the kitchen counter, LARRY stands with his arms folded, his eyes avoiding hers. His silence makes Bethany’s stomach tighten.
BETHANY
Larry… what happened?
Larry hesitates and rubs the back of his neck.
LARRY
Bethany… there was some drama here earlier.
BETHANY
What kind of drama?
LARRY
Charlotte got into it with the maintenance man… and she told him to leave the property.
Bethany freezes in place. Her eyes widen in disbelief, and then anger rises all at once.
BETHANY
She did what?
Without saying another word, Bethany turns and storms down the hallway toward Charlotte’s room.
INT. CHARLOTTE’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS
The door swings open. CHARLOTTE is sitting on her bed, scrolling through her phone like nothing happened. She looks up, startled by Bethany’s expression.
CHARLOTTE
Whoa. What is your problem?
BETHANY
My problem? My problem is that I just found out you kicked the maintenance man off my property.
Charlotte slowly puts her phone down and straightens up, immediately defensive.
CHARLOTTE
I didn’t kick him off like that. He was being disrespectful to me.
BETHANY
Why did you fire the maintenance man, Charlotte?
CHARLOTTE
Because he had an attitude with me. I asked him about the broken pipe in the backyard and he acted like I was annoying him. Then he talked to me like I was nobody.
BETHANY
So because you didn’t like his tone, you thought you had the right to throw him off the property?
CHARLOTTE
Bethany, stop acting like I committed some huge crime. That man was rude, and I wasn’t about to let him disrespect me on family property.
Bethany steps closer. Her face is calm, but her eyes are burning with anger.
BETHANY
Family property? Charlotte, this is my home. I hired that man. You do not get to make decisions like that because your feelings got hurt.
CHARLOTTE
So now my feelings don’t matter?
BETHANY
That’s not what I said. What I’m saying is you don’t throw people out because a conversation didn’t go your way.
Charlotte stands up from the bed and folds her arms tightly across her chest. Her pride is doing all the talking now.
CHARLOTTE
You always do this. You always take everyone else’s side before mine.
BETHANY
Then tell me exactly what happened.
FLASHBACK – EXT. BACKYARD – EARLIER THAT DAY
The maintenance man is crouched beside a leaking water line, focused on repairing it. Charlotte walks over with irritation already written on her face.
CHARLOTTE
How much longer is this going to take? The water pressure is terrible back here.
MAINTENANCE MAN
Ma’am, I’m fixing it. Give me a little time.
CHARLOTTE
You’ve been out here all morning. How hard is it to fix one pipe?
The maintenance man slowly stands up, tired and offended.
MAINTENANCE MAN
I don’t tell you how to do your business. Don’t tell me how to do mine.
CHARLOTTE
Watch your tone.
MAINTENANCE MAN
Then watch yours.
Charlotte points toward the gate, humiliated and furious.
CHARLOTTE
You know what? Pack your things and get off this property.
MAINTENANCE MAN
Bethany hired me. You can’t tell me to leave.
CHARLOTTE
I’m telling you to go.
BACK TO PRESENT – CHARLOTTE’S ROOM
Charlotte finishes telling the story and lifts her chin as if she still believes she was justified.
BETHANY
So you questioned him while he was working, pushed him until he snapped back, and then threw him out?
CHARLOTTE
I was standing up for myself!
BETHANY
No, Charlotte. You embarrassed an older man who was simply trying to do his job.
Charlotte’s face changes. For the first time, guilt flickers through her anger.
CHARLOTTE
He still shouldn’t have spoken to me like that.
BETHANY
Maybe not. But you also shouldn’t have spoken to him like he was beneath you.
Charlotte looks away, struggling with her pride. Bethany’s voice softens, but her authority remains firm.
BETHANY
If you felt disrespected, you should have come to me. You do not get to take control of my house and my workers.
CHARLOTTE
So what now?
BETHANY
Now you’re going to call him and apologize.
Charlotte’s head snaps up in disbelief.
CHARLOTTE
Excuse me?
BETHANY
It’s not a suggestion. You’re going to apologize for how you handled this.
CHARLOTTE
And what if I don’t?
BETHANY
Then you can find somewhere else to stay until you learn how to respect the people who work in and around this house.
Charlotte goes silent. The confidence on her face disappears, replaced by shock and regret. Bethany turns toward the door, exhausted but firm in her decision.
BETHANY
I’m calling him tonight and asking him to come back. Whether he accepts your apology is up to him. But this ends today.
Bethany walks out, leaving the door open behind her. Charlotte slowly sits back down on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor as the weight of her actions finally settles in.
For the first time all day, she whispers to herself—
CHARLOTTE
Maybe I went too far…
THE END… OR IS IT?
Final Hook: Charlotte is left with a choice—apologize and make things right, or let her pride create an even bigger family war. The real question is… will Bethany forgive her if she refuses?
