Nab) Dave’s mom asks Amber when she’s marrying Dave, leaving Amber shocked and speechless.

WHEN DAVE’S MOM ASKS ABOUT MARRIAGE

INT. DAVE’S PARENTS’ LIVING ROOM – AFTERNOON

The living room glows with warmth. Sunlight filters through cream curtains, falling softly over polished wooden furniture and framed family photographs. The room feels inviting, elegant, and full of life. A vase of fresh lilies sits in the center of the coffee table, filling the air with a sweet scent. Everything about the house feels calm and welcoming—except Amber’s racing heart.

Dave stands beside Amber with a proud smile, one hand resting lightly at the small of her back as if to reassure her that everything is fine. But Amber can barely breathe. She sits on the edge of the sofa, posture straight, fingers nervously twisting together in her lap. She is trying her best to look composed, but her eyes keep drifting around the room, taking in the smiling faces of Dave’s family.

This is the first time Dave has officially brought Amber home to meet everyone. She had expected questions—simple ones about her job, her family, maybe even how she and Dave met. She had prepared polite answers in her head on the drive over. But the one thing she had not prepared for was being asked about marriage in front of the entire family.

Dave’s mother, Mrs. Harris, sits in an armchair opposite them, her face bright with curiosity and affection. Dave’s father lounges nearby with a newspaper in his hands, pretending to read but listening to every word. Dave’s younger sister, Kayla, leans against the arm of the couch with a teasing smile, clearly enjoying the moment already.

Dave notices Amber’s nerves and gently squeezes her hand.

Amber forces a smile, hoping she can survive the afternoon without embarrassing herself.

THE QUESTION THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Mrs. Harris leans forward, folding her hands together in her lap. Her smile widens in a way that makes Amber instantly nervous.

MRS. HARRIS
Amber, sweetheart… I’ve been wanting to ask you something.

Amber straightens immediately, trying to appear relaxed.

AMBER
Of course.

Mrs. Harris tilts her head, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

MRS. HARRIS
When are you going to marry Dave?

Silence.

Amber freezes.

The smile on her face disappears for the briefest second before she quickly forces it back into place. Dave blinks in surprise, clearly not expecting his mother to be so direct. Kayla bites her lip to stop herself from laughing. Even Dave’s father lowers his newspaper just enough to watch Amber’s reaction.

Amber’s fingers tighten around her purse. Her pulse pounds in her ears.

Of all the questions she had imagined, this was not one of them. Not today. Not here. Not in front of everyone.

DAVE
Mom—

MRS. HARRIS
No, I’m serious. Look at you two. You’re perfect together. So tell me, Amber… when is the wedding?

Amber lets out a nervous laugh, but it sounds thin and shaky.

AMBER
Wow… that’s a very big question.

KAYLA
That means she doesn’t know.

DAVE
Kayla, stop.

Kayla lifts her hands innocently, but her grin remains.

Amber glances at Dave, silently begging him to rescue her, but Dave doesn’t interrupt. Instead, he looks at her carefully, waiting to see what she will say.

AMBER TRIES TO STAY CALM

Amber swallows hard. She knows everyone is waiting for an answer. She can feel the weight of their eyes on her, the pressure building in her chest.

The truth is complicated. She cares about Dave deeply—more than she wants to admit out loud. But marriage? They haven’t truly talked about it. Not seriously. Not in a way that made it feel real. And even if they had, Amber knows she still has fears she hasn’t faced.

She fears being hurt. She fears rushing into something because it looks perfect from the outside. She fears giving her heart to a future that may not last.

Amber lifts her chin and decides to answer as honestly as she can.

AMBER
Mrs. Harris, I really care about Dave. I do. And I think marriage is a beautiful thing… but I also think it’s a serious step. It’s not something that should happen just because people expect it to.

The room goes still. Mrs. Harris’s smile softens, but she keeps listening closely.

AMBER
If it ever happens, I’d want it to happen at the right time—when both people are fully ready, not just emotionally, but mentally too.

Dave’s eyes shift. There is something new in his expression now—something thoughtful, something deeper.

MRS. HARRIS
So… are you saying you’re not ready to marry my son?

Amber’s eyes widen.

AMBER
No, that’s not what I mean.

MRS. HARRIS
Then what do you mean, sweetheart?

Amber inhales slowly. Her cheeks burn with embarrassment, but she refuses to panic.

AMBER
I mean that if I ever marry Dave, I want it to be for the right reasons. Not because I was asked about it in a living room. Not because people think we look good together. And not because it’s simply the next step everyone expects.

Dave’s gaze locks onto hers.

AMBER
I’d want it to be because Dave and I looked at each other and knew—without pressure, without fear, without doubt—that we were choosing each other completely.

THE ROOM FALLS SILENT

No one speaks for a moment.

Kayla’s teasing smile fades. Dave’s father lowers the newspaper entirely now, giving Amber his full attention. Mrs. Harris studies Amber’s face as if trying to decide whether she’s impressed, worried, or both.

MRS. HARRIS
That’s a very careful answer.

AMBER
I guess I’m trying not to say the wrong thing.

MRS. HARRIS
And what would be the wrong thing?

Amber hesitates, then answers quietly.

AMBER
Pretending I have all the answers when I don’t.

Those words settle heavily in the room.

Dave looks down for a second, then back at Amber. He doesn’t seem angry. If anything, he seems shaken by her honesty.

Mrs. Harris sighs and leans back into her chair.

MRS. HARRIS
Well… I can respect honesty.

Amber lets out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

MRS. HARRIS
But I hope you know what you have in Dave. My son has loved hard before, and it hasn’t always ended well. I don’t want to see him hurt again.

Amber’s expression softens. That wasn’t said with cruelty, but it still lands like a warning.

AMBER
I would never intentionally hurt Dave.

MRS. HARRIS
I believe you. But love isn’t just about intention. It’s about clarity. If you’re in his life, be sure of what you want.

Amber absorbs every word. Dave finally steps in.

DAVE
Mom, that’s enough.

MRS. HARRIS
I’m not attacking her.

DAVE
I know. But she doesn’t owe anyone an answer today.

A QUIET MOMENT BETWEEN DAVE AND AMBER

Mrs. Harris eventually softens and excuses herself to the kitchen, calling Dave’s father with her. Kayla follows, throwing Amber one last amused smile before disappearing down the hall.

And just like that, the room becomes quiet.

Amber exhales shakily and drops back against the sofa.

AMBER
Well… that was terrifying.

Dave laughs softly and sits down beside her.

DAVE
You handled it better than I would have.

AMBER
Your mother really doesn’t waste time.

DAVE
No. She definitely doesn’t.

A silence stretches between them, but it’s different now—heavier, more honest.

DAVE
Everything you said in there… did you mean it?

Amber looks at him, startled by the seriousness in his tone.

AMBER
Yes.

DAVE
Even the part about wanting to be completely sure?

AMBER
Especially that part.

Dave nods slowly, as if her answer confirms something he’s been afraid to admit.

DAVE
Maybe my mom forced a conversation I should’ve had with you a long time ago.

AMBER
What conversation?

Dave turns toward her, his expression more vulnerable than she has ever seen.

DAVE
The conversation about whether I’m wasting your time… or whether I’m serious about building a future with you.

Amber stares at him, stunned.

AMBER
And are you serious?

Dave doesn’t look away.

DAVE
Yes.

Amber’s breath catches.

DAVE
But I don’t want you saying anything because my mom pressured you. I don’t want fear to make this decision for us. I want the truth, Amber… even if it scares me.

Amber’s eyes soften. She looks down at their hands, then back at him.

AMBER
The truth is… I can see a future with you, Dave. I can. But I need to know that if I step into that future, I won’t be stepping into it alone.

Dave gently takes her hand.

DAVE
You won’t.

ENDING SCENE

The sounds of laughter drift back from the kitchen, but Amber and Dave remain still on the sofa, caught in a moment that feels bigger than anything either of them expected. Amber came here to meet Dave’s family, thinking it would be a simple afternoon of polite smiles and introductions.

Instead, she found herself facing one of the biggest questions of her life.

Dave leans a little closer, his voice low and serious.

DAVE
Maybe my mom asked the question too soon… but sooner or later, we’re going to have to answer it.

Amber looks at him, her heart caught somewhere between fear and hope. She doesn’t know what the future will bring. She doesn’t know if she’s ready to say the word marriage out loud. But as she sits there with Dave’s hand in hers, one thing becomes painfully clear:

This is no longer just a casual relationship.

Something has shifted.

The question hanging in the air is no longer if they will talk about forever.

It’s when.

FADE OUT.
