The Third Ticket
Larry, Bethany, and Purnell — one romantic cruise, one unexpected guest, and a secret nobody saw coming.
Bethany thought a journey across the ocean could save her marriage. She never imagined the real storm would begin before they even left home.
01. A Surprise Worth Fighting For
After weeks of arguments and painful distance, Bethany finally returned to Larry's house. She was tired of living like a stranger to the man she still loved. She wanted something different this time: no accusations, no family interference, and no reminders of their bitter past.
One morning, she approached Larry with an excited smile and a colorful brochure hidden behind her back.
“I have a surprise,” she announced. “I booked us a cruise. We can dance under the stars, explore beautiful places, and spend real time together. Just you and me.”
Larry studied her face. “You think a vacation can fix everything we've been through?”
“No,” Bethany replied softly. “But maybe it can help us remember why we chose each other.”
Larry shrugged and pretended not to care. Yet the idea of escaping their problems appealed to him more than he wanted to admit. For the first time in days, he could imagine the two of them laughing together again.
02. An Unexpected Visitor
Later that afternoon, Larry stepped outside to clear his head. Just as he reached the driveway, his brother Purnell appeared, grinning as though he had arrived at exactly the right moment.
They embraced and began catching up. Larry casually mentioned Bethany's surprise.
“She's planning a cruise for us,” Larry explained. “Says we need some time away.”
Purnell's eyes widened. “A cruise? Man, I've been wanting a vacation myself! Count me in.”
Larry burst out laughing. “Now that's what I'm talking about! My brother and me on the same ship. We'll have a great time.”
Neither man paused to consider that Bethany had planned the trip for two. Larry was so pleased to include his brother that he rushed back inside to deliver what he thought was wonderful news.
03. The Invitation That Changed Everything
Bethany was folding clothes on the bed when Larry entered with a broad smile.
“All right,” he said. “I'll go on your cruise. And Purnell is coming with us!”
Her hands froze around a pink shirt. “Purnell? Larry, this is supposed to be our trip.”
“He's my brother. What's the problem?”
“The problem is that we need privacy,” she replied. “We need to talk without somebody interrupting us. I planned this because I want our marriage to survive.”
Larry's expression hardened. He heard her objection as a rejection of his family.
Bethany's frustration spilled over. She called Purnell an interfering old man and declared that she would never take him along. The moment the words left her mouth, she realized how deeply they had wounded Larry.
04. A Dangerous Moment
“Don't talk about my brother that way!” Larry shouted, stepping toward her.
“Then listen to what I'm actually saying!” Bethany cried. “I am trying to save us!”
The argument grew louder. Larry raised his hand in anger, and Bethany recoiled, frightened by the sudden movement. Before anything happened, Purnell hurried through the doorway and caught Larry's arm.
“Stop, Larry! This isn't the way,” Purnell said firmly. “Put your hand down.”
Larry stood breathing heavily while Bethany backed away. The room went quiet except for the sound of the ceiling fan.
Purnell released his brother only when he was certain the confrontation had stopped.
“Bethany has a point,” he admitted. “You two are married. You should have this time together. I'll stay home.”
But Larry shook his head. “No. You're my brother. If I go, you're going too.”
05. The Message Nobody Expected
Tears filled Bethany's eyes. “I came back because I believed we still had a chance. Why does every decision have to become a fight?”
Larry looked away. He wanted to defend Purnell, but he also knew he had frightened Bethany. He could not find the words to apologize.
Suddenly, Bethany's phone chimed. She glanced at the screen and frowned.
“Your cruise reservation for three passengers has been confirmed.”
She read the message again. “Three? That's impossible. I only booked two tickets.”
Larry moved closer, puzzled. “Maybe the company made a mistake.”
Before Bethany could answer, Purnell's phone vibrated. He checked the notification, and the smile vanished from his face. He quickly turned the screen away.
“Who's texting you?” Larry asked.
“Nobody important,” Purnell muttered.
Bethany stared at him. “Then why do you look terrified?”
06. The Secret Behind the Third Ticket
Purnell hesitated. For a moment, it seemed he might explain everything. Instead, he slipped the phone into his pocket.
“I should leave,” he said.
Larry blocked the doorway, not threatening him, but demanding an answer. “You were joking about joining us five minutes ago. Now you're acting like somebody warned you. What's going on?”
Purnell's voice dropped. “Larry, there's something about this cruise you don't understand.”
Bethany's stomach tightened. “What does that mean?”
Then her phone chimed again. This time the message contained three passenger names. The first was Bethany. The second was Larry.
The third name was not Purnell.
She stared at the screen, speechless. Whoever had arranged the additional booking knew exactly when they were leaving—and had somehow attached a stranger to their private trip.
Larry reached for the phone. “Bethany, whose name is that?”
Before she could answer, Purnell whispered, “I was hoping you wouldn't find out this way.”
