The New Lawyer
A sudden dismissal, a violent confrontation, and a secret that could destroy everyone in the room.
1. An Unexpected Arrival
At ten o’clock in the morning, the office was unusually quiet. Natasha sat beside Terry, while Cedric reviewed a stack of documents near the window. They had all grown used to Labby’s sharp temper and endless arguments, but nobody expected the announcement that was about to change everything.
The door swung open. Labby walked in with a confident young woman carrying a black briefcase. Her expression was serious, and her heels clicked against the polished floor. Everyone looked up.
Labby placed a folder on the table and faced the room.
For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Labby’s former lawyer, who had just entered behind them, froze in the doorway. Her face hardened as she realised that the announcement was about her.
2. Anger Behind a Smile
“What did you just say?” the furious woman demanded.
Labby did not look away. “You heard me. I no longer trust you with my case. You ignored my instructions, and I will not let you make another decision on my behalf.”
The woman glared at Emma. “You think you can take my place? You have no idea who you are dealing with. This case is far more dangerous than you can imagine.”
Terry struggled to hide his relief. For months, he had been exhausted by the former lawyer’s threats and constant interference. At last, he thought, the trouble might be over. A small smile escaped him.
She noticed it immediately. “What are you smiling at, Terry?”
Natasha exchanged a worried glance with Cedric. The room felt less like a workplace and more like a storm waiting to break.
3. The Corridor Confrontation
The dismissed lawyer snatched up her papers and stormed out. Terry followed her into the corridor, his patience finally exhausted.
“Get out of my way,” she snapped, trying to move past him.
In a sudden burst of anger, Terry grabbed her arm and shoved her. She stumbled and fell, scattering documents across the floor. Before she could get up, he forced her down again and shouted that he would never let her practise law peacefully if she continued threatening them.
Labby rushed into the corridor. “Terry, stop! Let her go!” She pulled at his arm and struck it with the folder she was carrying until he released the woman.
4. Natasha Reveals the Real Problem
“Are you all pleased with yourselves?” the woman asked quietly. “You think I have lost?”
Natasha stepped between her and Terry. “Enough! Let her speak. If you keep attacking her, how will we ever learn the truth? We need to know what she has hidden in Labby’s case file.”
Labby turned sharply. “What file? What are you talking about?”
Labby’s face drained of colour. “Where did you get this?”
5. A Warning from the Past
The dismissed lawyer looked at Emma as if she had been expecting her for years. “So, you finally came,” she whispered.
“I knew about you the night your father was arrested,” the woman replied. “If you want the truth, ask your mother where she was that night.”
“Then call your mother,” the woman said. “Ask her now. In front of everyone.”
With shaking fingers, Labby dialled the number. The phone rang once, twice, then a woman answered.
Silence filled the line. At last, her mother spoke in a frightened whisper.
6. The Call That Changes Everything
Tears filled Labby’s eyes. Before she could answer, a crash sounded through the phone, followed by hurried footsteps. She shouted for her mother, but a strange man’s voice came on the line.
Unknown Man: “If you want your mother alive, send your new lawyer out of that office. You have very little time.”
The call ended.
No one moved. Emma slowly closed her briefcase. “Now you have a choice, Labby. You can dismiss me, or you can trust me and help me find your mother.”
Labby looked at Emma, then at the former lawyer. A strange smile had appeared on the older woman’s face. Terry suddenly understood that getting rid of her might not have solved anything. She could be the only person who knew what had really happened five years ago.
“They found us,” she whispered.
Then the office lights went out.
And in the darkness, someone turned the key in the locked door.
