Bethany’s $200,000 Loan Decision Puts Larry on the Spot
For Bethany, Brooke’s future had become more than just a family concern. She wanted her stepdaughter to have something of her own — a business, a source of income, and a chance to prove that she could stand independently. After everything Brooke had experienced, Bethany believed a fresh start could change the direction of her life.
But turning that dream into reality required money. Bethany knew that launching a serious business would require significant capital, so she decided to approach the one person she believed could make it possible: her father, Mr. Newburger.
The $200,000 Request
Bethany sat down with Mr. Newburger and explained her plan. She told him that the money would be used to establish Brooke’s new business and help her become financially independent. She wasn't asking for a simple gift. She wanted a structured business loan that could eventually be repaid.
Mr. Newburger listened carefully. He understood Bethany’s desire to help Brooke, but he wasn't prepared to release $200,000 without protection. After considering the proposal, he agreed to move forward under one major condition.
Larry would have to personally guarantee the loan.
Newburger’s Condition Changes Everything
The paperwork was formal and serious. It included a Business Loan Agreement, a Promissory Note, and a Personal Guarantee. The documents explained that if the borrower failed to meet the repayment obligations, Larry could potentially become personally responsible for the debt.
Bethany understood exactly what the condition meant. She also knew Larry might object. Instead of discussing it with him before approaching her father, however, she decided to take the documents directly to Larry.
Bethany Places the Papers in Front of Larry
Later that day, Bethany walked into the room carrying a thick folder. Larry looked up, expecting an ordinary conversation. Bethany didn't say much. She simply placed the paperwork on the table in front of him.
Larry opened the first document and began reading. His eyes moved slowly across the pages. At first, he appeared confused. Then he noticed the loan amount.
$200,000.
Larry continued reading until he reached the section concerning the personal guarantee. His expression immediately changed. He looked at Bethany, then back at the papers.
“You want me to guarantee this?” Larry asked, his voice becoming noticeably tense.
Larry Demands an Explanation
Larry couldn't understand why Bethany had made such a serious financial arrangement without speaking to him first. He told her that supporting Brooke was one thing, but placing his personal finances behind a $200,000 obligation was an entirely different matter.
Bethany tried to explain herself. She said she wasn't trying to hurt Larry or take advantage of him. Her only goal was to give Brooke an opportunity.
“Brooke needs a fresh start,” Bethany insisted. “She needs something that belongs to her.”
Bethany believed Larry would understand because Brooke was family. She expected him to see the bigger picture and support the opportunity.
The Argument Turns Personal
Larry wasn't convinced. He pushed the documents back across the table.
He told Bethany that family relationships did not give her permission to attach his name to a financial agreement. A personal guarantee was not simply a signature. It could carry serious financial consequences if the business failed to repay the loan.
Bethany became emotional. She argued that Larry was focusing only on the risk instead of looking at what the opportunity could mean for Brooke.
But Larry saw another issue beneath the money.
Trust.
He reminded Bethany that major decisions had repeatedly become a source of conflict between them. Now she had approached her father, negotiated a $200,000 loan, and brought him the guarantee paperwork only after the arrangement was already underway.
Brooke’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Bethany refused to back down. She told Larry that she was willing to fight for Brooke’s future, even if it meant having an uncomfortable conversation with him.
Larry remained firm. He wasn't saying Brooke didn't deserve an opportunity. He was saying that his financial future couldn't simply become part of someone else's business plan without his consent.
The room fell silent.
Bethany stared at the documents on the table. Larry stared at her. Between them sat the papers that could determine whether Brooke's new business would ever begin.
