Terry and Genesis: The Baby They Thought They Had
A story of fear, hope, heartbreak, and one unforgettable dream
1. The News That Changed Everything
The room was quiet except for the sound of Terry pacing across the floor. Genesis sat on the couch with her hands folded tightly in her lap. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and Terry looked as if he had not slept in days. They had been waiting for answers about their baby, but every new conversation seemed to bring another reason to worry.
A knock suddenly interrupted the silence. Two Child Protective Services (CPS) workers stood at the door. Their serious expressions made Terry's stomach tighten. He invited them inside and immediately asked, “Where is our baby? What is happening?”
One worker opened a folder and explained that concerns had been raised about tablets Genesis had reportedly taken during her pregnancy. The workers said those concerns had made the baby's situation complicated and that they could not promise the couple would be allowed to take the child home.
Genesis covered her face as tears rolled down her cheeks. Terry stood up, struggling to understand what he had just heard. “You cannot expect us to accept this without answers,” he said. “Please tell us what is really happening.”
2. Terry Refuses to Give Up
The CPS workers tried to explain that the situation required careful review. Terry, however, could not bear the thought of never seeing the child he and Genesis had been waiting for. His voice trembled as he pleaded with them to let the couple know the truth.
Genesis reached for Terry's hand. She was frightened, but she could see that he was determined not to walk away without asking every possible question. He continued requesting another review and asked whether there was any way for them to receive a child through an approved arrangement.
After a long discussion, one worker finally said they would look into the matter and consider whether an arrangement could be made. The worker did not give them a clear answer or explain exactly what would happen next. But Terry heard the possibility of hope in those words.
He turned toward Genesis. For the first time that day, they both allowed themselves to imagine a happier ending.
3. A Shopping Trip Filled With Hope
The next morning, Terry and Genesis went shopping. The moment Genesis saw the baby section, her face changed. She picked up tiny blue outfits, soft blankets, little socks, miniature shoes, and adorable hats. Terry filled the cart with toys, bottles, a crib, and anything else he thought their son might need.
They were so excited that they barely checked sizes or asked whether each item would be suitable. Genesis held up a tiny shirt and smiled through happy tears. “Just imagine our little boy wearing this,” she said.
“He is going to have everything he needs,” Terry replied. “And he is going to know how much we love him.”
By the time they returned home, bags covered the living room. They arranged the clothes, placed toys around the nursery, and prepared a soft blanket on the baby's bed. Genesis stood in the doorway, imagining a little boy sleeping there. Terry looked around proudly, believing that their family was finally about to become complete.
4. The Knock at the Door
Later, the doorbell rang. Terry rushed to answer it. Standing outside were people who appeared to be from the child protection team. A nurse was with them, carefully holding a tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket with a blue cap.
One of the visitors told the couple that an arrangement had been made and that they were there to bring them the baby. Genesis gasped. Terry's hands began to shake as he stepped forward. The nurse gently placed the newborn in his arms.
Terry looked down at the tiny face and began to cry. Genesis moved closer, touching the baby's blanket with trembling fingers. “Our baby,” she whispered. “You're finally home.”
They held the child together, overwhelmed by emotion. Genesis showed the visitors the clothes they had bought, while Terry kept looking at the baby as though he could hardly believe the moment was real. For a little while, the fear, the arguments, and the uncertainty seemed to disappear. Their home felt full of happiness.
5. A Stranger Brings a Terrifying Message
Then another voice came from the doorway. “Mr. Terry, we need to speak with you immediately.”
Terry turned around. A different official stood there holding a file. The stranger looked confused when he saw the couple celebrating. He explained that no final decision had been made and that no baby had been officially placed with them. The situation, he said, was still unresolved.
The official looked around the room. His expression grew even more puzzled. He insisted that no child had been delivered and that the couple needed to understand the facts. Genesis looked toward the blanket in Terry's arms, but suddenly everything seemed uncertain. The room grew dim, the joyful sounds faded, and the official's voice became distant.
6. The Heartbreaking Truth
Terry suddenly opened his eyes. He was sitting in bed, breathing heavily. His cheeks were wet with tears. Genesis woke beside him, startled by his distress. There was no nurse, no official, and no newborn in his arms. The nursery was not filled with shopping bags. The baby clothes and toys were nowhere to be seen.
It had all been a dream.
Terry stared into the darkness, trying to understand how something so beautiful could have felt so real. He turned toward Genesis and struggled to speak. “I was holding our son,” he whispered. “He was right here. I thought we finally brought him home.”
Genesis began to cry too. She reached for his hand, but neither of them could find words to make the moment easier. The happiness they had felt in the dream was gone, leaving only the painful reality of their unanswered questions.
And somewhere in Terry's heart, one thought remained: he still wanted to bring their baby home. But would that day ever come?
